Kapu hau: new words He aha- What?
Porowhita- Circle te āhau- the shape (only 1)

Mānawa- Heart
Whētu- Star He aha te āhua?- What shape?
Niko- Crecent He aha ngā āhua?- What shapes?
Tapa- Edge
Tapatoru- Triangle He aha te āhua ā tenei?- what shape is this by me?
Tapawhā rite- Square – ā tēna (by you)
Tapawhā- Rectangle – ā tērā (over there)
Taparima- Pentagon He tapawhā te āhua
Tapaono- Hexagon -The shape is a rectangle.
Tapawaru- Octogon He porowhita, he tapawhā ngā ahua.
-The shapes are a circle and a rectangle.

Numbers and Counting

E hia – How many ( Not people ) Te = a/the- one thing
E hia ngā tepu?- How many tables? Ngā = more then one thing

E whā ngā tepu- 4 tables Tokohia – How many people.
If the number is between 2-9 Tokohia ngā tamarki
we keep the ‘E’ at the start. How many children ?
Rua tekau mā tahi ngā tamariki
E hia ngā tepu?- How many tables? 21 childen
Tokohia ngā tama? – How many boys?
Kotahi te tepu – 1 table
Tokowhā ngā tama – 4 boys

Introductions in Maori

Introductions: Where are you from?

 

Nō hea ahau?- Where am I from?

Nō hea koe?Where are you from?

Nō hea ia?- Where is he/she from?

 

hea *place* ahau.- I am from ….

hea *place* koe.- You am from ….

hea *place* ia.- He/she am from ….

 

E.g Nō Ōtautahi ahau- I am from Christchurch

      Nō Aotearoa ahau- I am from New Zealand

Maori Greetings

Today for are maori task we did some maori puzzles which you had to match the maori words with the english words.

This task was hard to do but eventually i got there.

English: Good morning

Maori: Ata Pai/ good morning

English: Safe return!

Maori: Hoki pai atu!/ safe return!
