For this task in science we made a poster about whether people with big feet have small pinky fingers or people with small feet have big pinky fingers.
Ramp it Up (or down)
Hypothesis
My hypothesis is that the marble will roll further because it has more weight, its small and is mostly used for races.
Steps
We are going to use this metre stick for are ramp.
The we are going to get a marble and a ping pong ball then roll it down the ramp one at a time ( 3 x each )
Results
Roll | Marble | Ping pong ball |
1 | 15 | 21 |
2 | 17 | 19.3 |
3 | 13 | 20.1 |
Average | 15 | 20.1 |
Conclusion
The hypothesis was incorrect I thought the marble would go faster because of its weight, but i found out that the ping pong ball when faster when it hit the ground ( because its light I think) .
Paper plane experiment
Hypothesis (What I think will happen)
I think that the small plane will fly further because its lighter and if you had a big plane it might not be easy for the wind to guide it. (Depends on how you make the paper plane tho)
Background
Fair test are good because you can trust the scientists
The first paper plane was made around 200 years ago.
The longest distance ever flown by a paper plane was 88.1 metres.
There are four forces that act on the paper plane when it is flying.
- Thrust, how fast it is pushed
- Lift, how much wing area can be pushed up
- Gravity, pulls the plane down
- Drag, slows the plane down
This video shows some information about how paper planes fly. I thought that it does a great job explaining how to make a great paper plane.
Equipment
- A4 paper
- A5 paper
- Chalk
- Metre stick
Steps (Method)
first grab a blank piece of paper
Next fold the left and right side of your paper at the top just like this
Then do the same thing you just did again
Now fold one of the sides
The fold the side you folded and to that on the other side
Then your done!
Results (What we found out)
I found out that the small plane did not fly further and the big plane flew further instead.
My hypothesis was wrong i thought the small would fly further but it didn’t.
The big plane did instead.
Conclusion (what it means)
The big plane flew further than the other plane.
i think the big plane flew further because of it wing span that can guide through the wind.
I did some research and found out that planes with bigger wings fly further because they can generate more lift. Here is a Youtube video explaining why. Especially at 5.30 where he talks about bigger wings generating lift.
